Some parents may think that baby teeth are not that important, because they will be replaced by adult teeth sooner or later. Apart from eating and esthetic function, baby teeth (primary teeth) play an important role in guiding the adult teeth (permanent teeth) to erupt into a right place. Tooth decay (dental caries) is a common chronic disease among children. Children with tooth decay may have growth disturbance as a result of eating problems. Decayed teeth may negatively affect the child’s appearance. More importantly, crooked teeth (malocclusion) might develop subsequently since early loss of the primary teeth due to caries may cause the permanent teeth erupt in a wrong place.
American Association of Pediatric Dentistry encourages parents and children to establish a good home-dental care, and also good oral habit. Brushing teeth twice daily, reducing the frequency of snacking between meals, no bottle-feeding while sleeping, and visiting dentists regularly are recommended to be the preventive measures. Child should go to visit a children’s dentist (paediatric dentist) as early as he/she starts to have teeth in the mouth. Paediatric dentist can not only give an individual-tailored plan of dental care, but also help your child to establish a good oral habit. Each child should receive an age-appropriate preventive dental care, such as oral health education, teeth cleaning, fluoride treatment, and fissure sealants. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Let’s work it out together!
